Lyrics

Sarangi Lyrics in English (Romanized)

Udi-udi man bhaagcha kina
Timraitira? Hera, bhana, ke garu ma?

Chaahera pani maile bhanna sakina
Timilaai, mero mutu chorisakyau timile
Bhaagera sharirbaata yo aatmaale
Chhodera gaachha timlaai nai khoji hidchu re

Mero din barbaad bho yaadmaa timro pheri
Bihaaniko suruwaat bho yaadmaa timro pheri

Udi-udi man bhaagcha kina
Timraitira? Hera, bhana, ke garu ma?
Muskaanle timro mero man saarangi jhai
Aaja bajna thaalyo, bhana, ke garu ma? Ke garu?

Haasera bola na, maayaa, sahana sakinna
Rutho timi bhaidiye, ki dukhidincha man nai
Chudielaa baajaakaa taar tara man ta mero
Saalau saal timi sunchhau bhane bajirahancha re

Timro ra mero bhet bho sanjogle bhanchhau ki?
Niyati nai timrai laagi lekhnu raichha yo geet

Mitho-mitho kuraa gara na, sunu ma kasari?
Gahiro, kaalo ti aankhaamaa herera bhulu ma kasari?

Timrai abhaav mahasus bhaachha
Chha hataas manmaa, timi nai jawaaf

Sarangi Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

Why does my heart keep flying off,
running your way? Look, tell me — what am I to do?

Even when I wanted to, I could not say it
to you; you had already stolen my heart
This soul, escaping the body,
leaves and walks off searching for you

My day was ruined again, in memory of you
My morning began again, in memory of you

Why does my heart keep flying off,
running your way? Look, tell me — what am I to do?
Your smile has turned my heart into a sarangi
that began playing today — tell me, what do I do? What do I do?

Speak with a smile, love; I cannot bear it
If you turn sullen, this heart simply aches
The strings of an instrument may snap, but my heart —
if you keep listening, year after year, it will keep playing

Will you say you and I met by coincidence?
It seems fate itself had this song to write for you

Say something sweet — how am I meant to listen?
Look into those deep, dark eyes — how am I meant to forget?

I feel the lack of you
There is despair in this heart; you are the answer

About "Sarangi" by Sushant KC

The sarangi is a four-stringed folk fiddle played with a bow, historically carried door to door by Gandharva musicians who sang the news and the sorrows of the hills. Choosing it as the song's central image, rather than a guitar or a piano, roots a contemporary pop ballad in a much older Nepali idea: that a stringed instrument is how grief and longing get carried around and made public.

The metaphor is worked out carefully rather than just stated. Her smile is the bow; his heart is the instrument that started sounding the moment it was drawn across him. The instrument is passive by design — it has no say in whether it plays. That is the song's quiet complaint, set up by the opening question, why does my heart keep running your way, which he asks as if about someone else's behaviour.

The best lines are the two about durability. "Chudielaa baajaakaa taar" — the strings of an instrument might snap — but a heart, he says, will go on playing for years as long as someone is still listening. It reframes love as an audience problem rather than a feeling: he is not asking her to love him back so much as asking her not to stop listening. The closing couplet drops the metaphor entirely and simply names the condition — there is despair in this heart, and you are the answer.
