Lyrics

Hera, timilai ke bhannu ma
Kasari bujhaunay, kina maya timlai dherai garchu?
Thaha cha, timi lai dherai bhannu cha
Kasari bujhaunay kina

Ahilay samma sapana ma matrai thiyau
Kasari bujhaunay, kina timilai dherai heri rakhchu

Aaja matra bihana, sapana thiyau
Timro aawaj timro bolai, kalpana ma thiyau
Kasari nahernay timro ankha ko ishaara?
Sakindaina birsana tyo mooskaan timro

Hera timilai k bhannu aba?
Thaha nai chaina, sabai kura kata haraisakyo;
Ke thaha ra sanchhai yesto huncha bhani?
Kasari bujhaunay timilai?

Ahilay samma timi ma ma haraibasen
Kasari bujhaunay, kina timlai sandhai khoji rakchu?

Aba biunjhai sanga daraunu pardaina
Timro aawaj sunnalai nidaunu pardaina
Ankha chopi kalpana maa haraunu pardaina
Timro nyaano angalo maa basna

Aaja Matra Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

Look, what am I to tell you?
How do I explain why I love you so much?
I know there is a great deal you want to say
How do I explain why

Until now you were only in dreams
How do I explain why I keep on looking at you so much

Only this morning, you were a dream
Your voice, your way of speaking, were things I imagined
How is one supposed to not look at the signal in your eyes?
That smile of yours is impossible to forget

Look, what am I to say to you now?
I simply do not know; everything has got lost somewhere
Who could have known it might really turn out like this?
How do I explain it to you?

Until now I had gone and lost myself in you
How do I explain why I am always searching for you?

Now I need not be afraid of waking
I need not fall asleep in order to hear your voice
I need not close my eyes and disappear into imagining
what it is to sit inside that warm embrace of yours

About "Aaja Matra" by Sajjan Raj Vaidya

The title means "only today", and the whole song turns on a change of tense that happens between the first verse and the last. For most of its length the narrator is describing a person who exists only as an idea — someone who was in dreams, whose voice and speech he had to imagine, whose smile he replayed. Then, at some point on the morning the song describes, she became real.

Vaidya structures the verses as a repeated failure to explain. Kasari bujhaunay — how do I make this understood — opens and closes almost every section, and it is asked about increasingly basic things: why he loves her so much, why he keeps looking at her, why he is always searching. The song never answers any of them.

The final verse is the payoff, and it is built entirely out of things he no longer has to do. He does not have to fear waking up, because waking no longer takes her away. He does not have to fall asleep to hear her voice. He does not have to shut his eyes and imagine an embrace. Three habits of longing, each named and then cancelled.

That is an unusual way to write a happy ending, and it is what gives the song its particular warmth. The joy is not described directly at all. It is described as the sudden disappearance of a set of coping mechanisms.
