Lyrics

Lukaamaari Lyrics in English (Romanized)

Maayaalu khai ke bhanu
Lukaamaari khelchan meraa
Boli sabai lajaaudai
Ti aankhaa le jiskaaudaa

Bayaan ma kati garu
Oiliyelaan shabdaharu
Yi oth le ti othlaai
Rangaaera bhanchu baru

Maayaalu timilaai maayaa garchu
Timisangai baachi aba
Timi sangai marchu

Maayaa timi nai bhana na
Kahaabaata lyaaunu aba
Upamaa ma nayaa-nayaa
Timilaai bujhaauna

Bayaan ma jati garchu
Apag chan labajaharu
Yi aankhaa le ti aankhaamaa
Niyaalera bhanchu baru

Maayaalu, timilaai maayaa garchu
Timisangai baachi aba
Timi sangai marchu

Sustari-sustari, bilaai jaau ma pani
Meraa bholi sari, timimai

Boli ta boli na ho
Tara kahilekaahi
Tehi bolimai
Bhanideu malaai

Maayaalu timilaai maayaa garchu
Timi bhetna baachi base
Timi sangai marchu

Lukaamaari Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

Beloved, what am I to say —
my words play hide and seek,
every one of them turning shy
when those eyes of yours tease me

How much can I possibly explain?
The words would wilt before I finished
Better that these lips say it
by colouring those lips instead

Beloved, I love you
Let me live with you now,
and die alongside you

Love, you say it then —
where am I to find them now,
these new comparisons,
to make you understand

However much I explain,
the phrases come out crippled
Better that these eyes say it
by looking steadily into those eyes

Beloved, I love you
Let me live with you now,
and die alongside you

Slowly, slowly, let me dissolve too —
like my tomorrows, into you

Words are only words,
but once in a while,
in those very words,
say it to me

Beloved, I love you
I stayed alive to meet you,
and I will die alongside you

About "Lukaamaari" by Sajjan Raj Vaidya

"Lukaamaari" is the Nepali name for hide and seek, and the game in this song is being played by the narrator's own words. Every time he tries to speak, his vocabulary runs off and hides — "boli sabai lajaaudai", all my speech turning shy — because the person he loves is looking at him with teasing eyes.

The song then does something clever: it proposes physical alternatives to language. If words wilt, let the lips say it by touching hers. If phrases come out crippled, let the eyes say it by looking directly into hers. Each verse tries speech, fails, and substitutes a body. That structure is the entire song, repeated with rising intimacy.

The chorus is where it stops being playful. "Timisangai baachi aba, timi sangai marchu" — let me live with you now and die alongside you — is a much larger promise than the flirtation around it prepared you for, and the contrast between the shy verses and the absolute chorus is what gives the song its charge. The bridge goes further still: let me dissolve slowly into you, the way my tomorrows do.

The final verse contains the quiet reversal. After spending the whole song arguing that words are inadequate, the narrator asks her to use them anyway: words are only words, but once in a while, say it to me in those very words. He knows language is not enough. He wants to hear it regardless.
