About "Hawaijahaj" by Sajjan Raj Vaidya
"Hawaijahaj" — literally "airplane" — is a long-distance love song, and the aeroplane in it is doing double duty. On the surface it is simple transport: the narrator will board a hundred thousand planes, or swim an ocean if there is no flight, just to stand in front of the person he loves. Underneath, it is the specific ache of the Nepali diaspora, where love is routinely conducted across a continent and a visa queue.
The real subject of the song is not distance but the failure of language. Verse after verse, the narrator describes trying to say what he feels — dressing his emotions in words, decorating them, gathering them into sentences — and concluding each time that it cannot be done. "Sakidaina, sambhav chaina, timilaai na angaales": it is impossible, not without holding you. The aeroplane becomes necessary precisely because words have been tried and found insufficient.
That is why the closing image lands the way it does. He does not want to describe her face; he wants to draw it with touch. He does not want to be told she loves him; he wants his heart to hear her heartbeat directly. Both are things a phone call cannot deliver, and both are the song's argument for why he has to physically come.
Vaidya keeps the arrangement deliberately unhurried and conversational, closer to someone thinking aloud than performing, which is why the flight imagery never tips into grandeur.
