Lyrics

Ke khaale maya yo?
Dindinai kamaunu parne re
Manle pugadaina shir mathi chadhaunu parne re

Yesari marera, maya lauda ke paiyo ra, khai?
Lau, timi nai raakh yo kahi na bhako man timi sangai, oh

Kina gauchan kuni maya bare ma?
Aafulai ta pirati le khile fapena
Basdina hai ma chai timi parkhe ra
Jaanchu jun baato aaye tehi baato farke ra

Ke taal ko man pari aafai lai maha rani re?
Kun chai le guff laai diyo
Aafulai khubai thanixe
Ki ke ho khai?
Timro kurai bujhe ta ke bhanu
Khile ghumauro kura ma timle ghumayou, ma ni ghumde

Yesari marera, maya launda ke paiyela hai?
Lau, timi nai raakh yo kahi na bhako man timi sangai

Kina gauchan kuni maya bare ma?
Aafulai ta pirati le khile fapena
Basdina hai ma chai timi parkhe ra
Jaanchu jun baato aaye tehi baato farke ra

Mahango rahe cha maya timro, malaai chahiеna
Chokho maya khoje kai thiye, tyo ni paiena
Eh kaanchi, timrai pachi lagе, bujhe yesto po rahe cha
Timro maya mahango, mutu chai sasto rahe cha

Mahango rahe cha maya timro, malaai chahiena
Chokho maya khoje kai thiye, tyo ni paiena
Eh kaanchi, timrai pachi lage, bujhe yesto po rahe cha
Timro maya mahango, mutu chai sasto rahe cha

Sasto Mutu Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

What sort of love is this?
Something you have to earn day after day
The heart is never enough; it has to be carried up above your head

Dying like this, what did I get out of loving? What, exactly?
Here — you keep it, this heart that came to nothing, keep it with you, oh

Why on earth do people sing about love?
For me, love never suited me, it never took
I am not going to sit here waiting for you
I will go back down whichever road I came by

What kind of heart makes itself out to be the great queen?
Who was it that puffed you up?
You thought very highly of yourself —
or what was it?
And if I did understand what you were saying, what can I say —
you spun me a roundabout story, and round I went with it

Dying like this, what is there to be got out of loving?
Here — you keep it, this heart that came to nothing, keep it with you

Why on earth do people sing about love?
For me, love never suited me, it never took
I am not going to sit here waiting for you
I will go back down whichever road I came by

Your love turned out to be expensive; I do not want it
I had gone looking for love that was pure; I did not find that either
Oh Kaanchi, I went after you, and here is what I came to understand —
your love is expensive, but the heart turns out to be cheap

About "Sasto Mutu" by Sajjan Raj Vaidya

The title means "cheap heart", and the closing couplet is one of the sharpest things in Vaidya's catalogue: your love is expensive, but the heart turns out to be cheap. Love has a price that keeps rising; the organ that does the loving is worth nothing on the same market.

The song's whole framework is commercial, and bitterly so. Love here is something you have to earn day after day, something the heart is never sufficient payment for — it must be carried above the head, the Nepali gesture of holding something up in deference. He describes being talked into a roundabout story and going round with it, which is the language of having been sold something.

What keeps it from being simply sour is the decision in the chorus. He does not threaten, plead, or ask for an explanation. He says he will go back down whichever road he came by — a complete withdrawal that leaves the account settled. And when he hands the heart back, he is careful to devalue it first: keep it, this thing that came to nothing.

The line that gives away the most is quieter than the insults around it: chokho maya khoje kai thiye, tyo ni paiena. He had gone looking for love that was pure, and he did not find that either. Underneath the sarcasm, the complaint is not that she was expensive. It is that what he actually wanted was not on sale anywhere.
