Lyrics

Suna Kaanchi Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

You drift about everywhere — are you a fairy, or a bird?
Music has started up in my heart, over this way — listen, Kaanchi

The whole scale runs, sa-re-ga-ma-pa, the moment I see you
So what is it you actually want? Say it, say it

You and I will have to get acquainted all over again
You might take fright when I move inside your heart

When other people call out to me,
who knows what they call me
But you — you call me "beloved"

My heart has turned into a kite; this youth of mine is untouched
It only grew up after meeting you
You have left me completely dazed — like a kite spool,
wind me in, pull the string and take me home

You are my very first love, you know
So it is you I am going to love now
What would I possibly gain by lying to you?
I am a sensible boy, whoa

Which village are my in-laws in?
When should I come, and where, bringing the wedding band?
Where do I sign, and in which place?
Tell me, tell me, Kaanchi, whoa

Ah! They say this is how it goes — you fly up and touch the moon
They say a heart that love has stolen
forgets even its own heartbeat

So bring them over here, those lips, in exchange for my heart
Otherwise I will simply die

It has gone too far now; staying away has become hard
You are so beautiful it has turned into a health hazard

I am addicted to it — that intoxicating look of yours, Kaanchi, yeah

My heart has turned into a kite; this youth of mine is untouched
It only grew up after meeting you
You have left me completely dazed — like a kite spool,
wind me in, pull the string and take me home

You are my very first love, you know
So it is you I am going to love now
What would I possibly gain by lying to you?
I am a sensible boy, whoa

Lahai! Lahai! Lahai!
(Here it comes!)

Kaanchi, my Kaanchi, keep me as your Kaancha
A signal from the eyes, lips turned my way —
call me over with a kiss

Since the day I saw you, from the soles of my feet up
it feels like I have reached the far side of heaven
Whether God exists or not, I do not know
but my heart asks only for you

Sharpening the scythe for cutting grass, my youth came of age
Who do I give this youth to? Who do I give this youth to?

Lahai, you and I are two lovers, lahai
From now on and forever after, lailai

About "Suna Kaanchi" by Sajjan Raj Vaidya

"Suna Kaanchi" is Vaidya at his most playful. "Kaanchi" is what you call the youngest daughter of a family, used widely as an affectionate name for a young woman, and "Kaancha" is its male counterpart — so when the narrator asks her to "keep me as your Kaancha", he is asking to be paired off with her in the most homely, village-vocabulary way available.

The song is built on a joke it keeps returning to: this is a courtship conducted entirely in the language of logistics. Rather than declaring love, he starts asking practical wedding questions — which village are my in-laws in, when should I come with the panchebaajaa, where exactly do I sign. The panchebaajaa is the five-instrument ensemble that leads a traditional Nepali wedding procession, so he is essentially proposing by asking for directions to the venue.

Musically the flirtation is literal. "Sa-re-ga-ma-pa chaldai cha timlaai dekhdaa" — the scale itself starts running when he sees her — and the kite imagery that follows makes him the object rather than the pursuer: he is the kite, she holds the spool, and he asks to be reeled in and pulled home. The line most people quote back is the comic one, that she is so beautiful it has become a health hazard, but the sweetest is quieter: whatever other people call him, he asks that she call him maayaalu, beloved.
