Radha Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

(Female — Intro / Chorus)

The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train
The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train

(Male — Verse 1)
I will steal this love away and carry it off... ho ho
I will steal this love away and carry it off,
breaking straight through the Bhairu ridge with a machine

(Female — Chorus)
The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train
The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train

(Male — Verse 2)
From where might my love have spoken... ho ho
From where might my love have spoken?
The burning heart has been cooled

(Female — Chorus)
The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train
The lights must have come on by now
I am going, on the butterfly train

(Male — Bridge 1)
In the shade of the kadam tree let us talk a while
With sweet words let us fill ourselves with courage
In the shade of the kadam tree let us talk a while
With sweet words let us fill ourselves with courage

(Male — Bridge 2)
Youth goes tilting away and fading
I came following along behind you
Do you feel no love at all, then?
Am I not even allowed to speak a little?

(Female — Bridge 3 / Response)
As for speaking, one may certainly speak
but speaking requires a manner as well
As for speaking, one may certainly speak
but speaking requires a manner as well

(Female — Chorus)
The lights must have come on

About "Radha" by Swoopna Suman

"Radha" is built as a dohori — the Nepali call-and-response form in which a man and a woman trade improvised verses, with the exchange itself as the entertainment. Knowing that changes how the song reads: this is not a duet where two people sing the same feeling, it is a contest with rules.

The male verses escalate steadily. He will steal this love and carry it off. He will drive straight through the Bhairu ridge with a machine to do it. He proposes talking in the shade of the kadam tree, notes that youth is already tilting away, and finally complains — am I not even allowed to speak a little?

The woman's answer is the best line in the song and the reason it works: bolna lai bolna ta paincha, bolne pani tarika chahincha. As for speaking, certainly, one may speak — but speaking requires a manner as well. She does not refuse him. She critiques his technique, which in dohori is both a genuine rebuke and a move in the game.

Her chorus is doing something quieter. While he is making grand declarations about ridges and machines, she keeps returning to a practical observation and a departure: the lights must be on by now, and she is leaving. He is negotiating; she has somewhere to be. Swoopna Suman's arrangement keeps the folk structure intact rather than flattening it into a pop duet, which is what lets that contrast land.
