Bidai Lyrics - Nepathya

"Bidai" means farewell, and this is a very short song that gets its weight from how little it says. There are two verses and a single repeated word, and the repetition of bidai is doing the work that additional verses would do in a longer piece.

The first verse is a series of questions in ascending disbelief: so you have gone, have you really gone, did you go while everyone was telling you not to, and did you go in a way that means you will not come back. The last question is the only one that matters, and the fact that it has to be asked at all tells you the answer arrived without warning.

The second verse is the eulogy, and it defines the person entirely by their work: you sang the songs of the Himalaya, you composed the songs of the hills, you laid a boundless love across earth and sky. There is no personal detail, no anecdote, nothing private. The person is described the way a body of work is described.

It reads unmistakably as an elegy, and Nepathya's audience has always received it that way. The band has spent decades as the most recognisable voice of Nepali folk-rock, and a song in which the departed is remembered specifically as someone who sang the hills is also, unavoidably, a song about what the band itself does.
