Maya Ma Lyrics — English Translation & Meaning

Is it only I who is to keep doing this,
or is this love your right as well?
In love the laughter keeps shifting, the laughter keeps growing
You had walked on ahead, handing out happiness

In the course of finding happiness, in this love,
I will not forget — I would sooner give this very heart again

I could not make myself forget your support and mine
And if I do move far away, then take this love into your arms

I will not forget — I would sooner give this heart again
I could not make myself forget your support and mine

If I do move far away, then take me into your arms
There is the sunlight there, and the moon there too

When it comes, I will come to you and call you a ray of light
If you truly gave love, I will truly keep it

Having given love, it was only love I took from you
If you wish, I will spend my days fulfilling what you want

Having given you happiness, and calling that happiness itself,
let us live on in this love — I will not forget, I would sooner

give this very heart again; your support and mine
I could not make myself forget; and if I move away,

then take me into your arms
Is it only I who is to keep doing this, or is love...

About "Maya Ma" by Purna Rai

The song opens with the only question that matters in an unequal relationship: "K maile matrai gari rahane ho?" — is it only I who is to keep doing this? The second half of the line makes the accusation gentler by turning it into an offer: or is this love your right as well? He is not complaining that she does not love him. He is asking her to claim a share of the work.

The recurring promise is the giving of the heart a second time. Not the first gift, which has already been made and apparently not returned, but a repeat of it — and the phrasing is boru, "rather" or "sooner", as in: rather than forget, I would give it again. Repetition is being offered as an alternative to withdrawal.

The imagery stays modest and domestic in scale. Sunlight and a moon, a ray of light, an embrace to be entered if distance opens up. There is no grand declaration anywhere in the song, which suits a lyric whose central request is simply for reciprocity.

The circular structure is deliberate. The song ends on the same unfinished question it began with, cut off mid-line. Nothing has been answered, and the asking starts again — which is the experience the song is describing. The romanised transcription here is rough in places, so a few lines are rendered by sense rather than word for word.
