About "Hai Katha Sangram Ki" by Mahabharat
This is the title theme of B. R. Chopra's Mahabharat, the television serial that ran from 1988 and emptied Indian streets every Sunday morning. The lyric is by Rahi Masoom Raza, who also wrote the screenplay, and it functions less as a song than as an invocation — the formal announcement that an epic is about to be recited.
Its vocabulary is deliberately Sanskritised rather than conversational, stacking paired opposites: dharma and adharma, truth and untruth, self-interest and the highest good. That pairing is the thesis of the Mahabharata itself, a text in which no side is wholly righteous and the war is won by people who also transgress. The theme song refuses to simplify that, which is a notable choice for a mass-audience opening title.
The claim it makes is enormous and stated without hedging: this is the complete essence of life, the proof of centuries, the book of books. It is asserting the traditional position that the Mahabharata contains everything, and that whatever is not in it exists nowhere.
There is one detail always worth mentioning. Rahi Masoom Raza was a Muslim writer, and his appointment to script a Hindu epic drew objection at the time. His response was to point to the Ganga and call himself a son of that river; the theme he wrote, invoking the Ganga and the Gita without hesitation, is part of the answer he gave.
