Lyrics
Here's to the ones that we got Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories Of everything we've been through Toast to the ones here today Toast to the ones that we lost on the way 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories And the memories bring back, memories bring back you There's a time that I remember, when I did not know no pain When I believed in forever, and everything would stay the same Now my heart feel like December when somebody say your name 'Cause I can't reach out to call you, but I know I will one day, yeah Everybody hurts sometimes Everybody hurts someday, ayy-ayy But everything gon' be alright Go and raise a glass and say, ayy Here's to the ones that we got Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories Of everything we've been through Toast to the ones here today Toast to the ones that we lost on the way 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories And the memories bring back, memories bring back you Doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo Memories bring back, memories bring back you There's a time that I remember when I never felt so lost When I felt all of the hatred was too powerful to stop (ooh, yeah) Now my heart feel like an ember and it's lighting up the dark I'll carry these torches for ya and you know I'll never drop, yeah Everybody hurts sometimes Everybody hurts someday, ayy-ayy But everything gon' be alright Go and raise a glass and say, ayy Here's to the ones that we got (oh-oh) Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories Of everything we've been through (no, no) Toast to the ones here today (ayy) Toast to the ones that we lost on the way 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories (ayy) And the memories bring back, memories bring back you Doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo Memories bring back, memories bring back you Doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo (ooh, yeah) Memories bring back, memories bring back you Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no Memories bring back, memories bring back you Songwriters: Adam Levine, Vincent Ford, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Jordan Johnson, Jonathan Bellion, Stefan Johnson, Michael Pollack.

About "Memories" by Maroon 5
"Memories" is built on Pachelbel's Canon in D, a chord progression so embedded in Western listening that it arrives already sounding like a memory. Using it for a song about grief is a deliberate shortcut: the melody feels familiar before you have heard it, which is roughly how mourning works.
The song was written after the death of the band's longtime manager Jordan Feldstein, and its central move is refusing to separate celebration from loss. The lyric raises a glass, and then names what the drinking is for. Everything pleasant in it — the toast, the friends, the memories — is explicitly described as a substitute for a person who is not coming back.
The most quoted line, that there's a time that we let go and everybody here comes and goes, is doing something slightly harder than consolation. It does not promise reunion or meaning. It states turnover as a fact about being alive, and the song's comfort is simply that the turnover is shared.
The production is unusually stripped for late-period Maroon 5 — no big pop drop, minimal percussion, a vocal kept close and conversational. The restraint is what lets the song function as it has come to function in practice: as a piece people put on at funerals and memorials, where a bigger arrangement would have been unbearable.
